How to Turn Your Hair into a Glamorous French Crown Braid
The crown braid is traditionally done using the French braid as a
base, but with the hair circling from a center point on the back of the
head. It can be an elegant hairstyle for a formal occasion or an
easy-to-maintain hairdo on a casual day. Also known as the coronet
braid, the crown braids can work well with both long and short hair. At
first glance, the French crown braids look very attractive, but
extremely intimidating to replicate. However, although it can be
difficult to do for first-timers and if you’re doing it on yourself,
this type of French braid can be done easily with practice.

French braid crowns stay up very well and suits almost every shape of
face. It is extremely comfortable to wear even with long hair because
the weight is distributed evenly around the head. If you want to weave
the French crown braid, here’s an 8-step guide you can follow:
- Don’t wash your hair if you plan to make a French braid crown
the following day. Day-old unwashed hair is easier to weave into
braids, regardless of the type of braid you choose.
- Brush the hair thoroughly and make sure it is tangle free before
starting. Pick a central point on the crown of your head and ensure
that the hair falls evenly around the face and back. Take note of
the central point.
- If the hair is dry, dampen it with water from a spray bottle,
but avoid saturating the hair. Start the braid from behind the left
ear from the central point to the hairline. Divide it into 3
sections. Each section should not be thicker 2 inches.
- If you know how to make a basic French braid, the first step is
easy – cross the left strand over the middle and then the right over
the middle. Every time you place a strand to the middle, you need to
add more hair further back, so that the braid would look like it is
encircling around the head when complete. Make sure to tighten the
braid.
- If you want to have a single-row French crown, add big pieces of
hair. If you want it to encircle the head several times, add smaller
pieces.
- Braid the hair as far as possible. When all your hair is
gathered into the braid, secure the end with a rubber band or hair
elastic.
- Wrap the braid around the head, in front or behind the first
layer of braid. Tuck in the tassel under the crown using bobby pins.
Remember to pin it securely to prevent the ends from straggling out.
- Spray the braid with hairspray to keep flyaway strands of hair
and loose ends under control. Hairspray can also help in keeping the
braid secured.
Be aware that like other variations of French braids, the crown braid
can be tricky. However, when you master making French braids and
practice doing the crown, you can do this hairstyle in 10 minutes tops.
Some people find it easier to divide hair into quarters and then braid
one quarter at a time, while others use other types of crown braids,
such as the Dutch crown. However, since French braid crowns can look
very sophisticated and romantic, it is has become a favorite of those
sporting bohemian chic clothes. |
